with Elizabeth ReibackElizabeth Reiback: Almost 10 years ago, Elizabeth discovered Yoga. Yoga has transformed her body, mind, and soul. After serious physical impediments prohibiting her from walking, sitting, and standing for more than 5 minutes at a time without being in excruciating  pain, yoga has helped her overcome these obstacles. As a teacher, she wants to share this art with her students by helping them develop a mindful, intelligent, fun, and safe practice. Elizabeth has traveled to India to study with the Iyengars and will continue to further her knowledge as a student and, as a result, as a teacher. She thanks her teachers James Murphy, Lara Warren, Lucienne Vidah, and Alison West for their transformative teachings. Elizabeth has studied backcare with Elise Miller, Alison West, and Deborah Wolk. 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm No class 9/5

  • Spinal Fusions

    Spinal Fusions

Because of the contraindications with Harrington Rods and other instrumentation, being in a general class—even one focused on scoliosis or back problems—can be frustrating. This class covers all the principles and poses of the Yoga & Scoliosis classes but without twists, convex forward bending, back bending. The practice will help strengthen muscles around the fusion in an aligned manner, bring stability to hypermobile joints or open up very stiff areas—without destabilizing the body or the instrumentation itself.
with Jen GormanGorman_Jen_20_xret_crop Jen Gorman was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of eleven. Less than a year later she underwent surgery that involved fusing much of her thoracic spine. The doctor’s instructions were rather vague and involved continuing to dance but avoiding gymnastics. Jen carried on through life as though nothing happened. She attended the University of Notre Dame and studied accounting (noting that extended hours studying hurt her back!), became a certified public accountant (noting that extended hours working hurt her back!), and then returned to dancing professionally (noting that extended hours dancing hurt her back!). She began practicing yoga to balance her body, discovering that it also allowed her to manage and even prevent pain. After years of practicing yoga and completing a teacher training, Jen finally found her way into a yoga for scoliosis class, which brought to light an even deeper understanding of her body and the effects of scoliosis! She studied yoga for scoliosis and back care with Elise Miller Browning and Alison West, and with Deborah Wolk, with whom she still apprentices today. Jen continues to dance, sing, and act to the beat of her own drum. She is also a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and holds certificates in Functional Movement Systems and TRX Suspension. 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm

Yoga & Scoliosis for Teens & Tweens Series

This class in appropriate for ages 11-17. All teens are welcome to this class but as idiopathic scoliosis is commonly diagnosed in adolescence, the class will generally focus of scoliosis. This 1-hour class creates an environment that is less intense that the adult classes, allows teens to relate with one another, and is sequenced for a young person's energy level. Dahlia Galler's positivity and experience with her own scoliosis will communicate how the love of yoga will lead to a healthier relationship to the body...at a time when this relationship is particularly difficult.
with Dahlia Galler Dahlia Galler While studying at Parsons School of Design, Dahlia worked as a visual merchandiser at Yogaworks. It was there where she practiced her first Downward Dog and learned to let go. In class one day, a friend noticed her scoliosis and recommended that she check out Yoga Union Center for Backcare & Scoliosis. After only one class, Dahlia was hooked. It was at Yoga Union Center for Backcare & Scoliosis where she seriously began her yoga journey, which she sees as a balance between effort and ease, and between hard work and letting go. After completing her 200 Hour RTS Certification with Alison West's 200 Hours Yoga Union Teacher Training receiving her 200 Hour RYT Certification, she began her apprenticeship with Deborah Wolk, assisting with back care and scoliosis classes, which she continues to do. Dahlia lives in New York City and is not only a yogini, but a freelance interior designer and stylist.
