Hello! My name is Christy and my yoga journey started in Hawaii in 2003 (where I was born and raised). I was a practitioner since childhood and into my early career as a researcher and lab instructor in anatomy and physiology at the University of Hawaii. Unbeknownst to me, it became my career and lifestyle that reached past my work. Combining the methodical approach of scientific research and the therapeutic applications of yoga I completed my 500 hour training at Yoga Union Center for Backcare & Scoliosis under Alison West in NYC.
I offer my students insight into their own bodies and ways in which to heal themselves holistically. Whether working with an injury (such as herniations, spondylolisthesis, etc.), scoliosis, general neck/back pain, or posture training (for overall spinal health), my intention is to empower you with the information and mindful movements that help you live with comfort and ease. A holistic, kind, and conscious approach to flowing with life is what my practice offers and it starts on the mat. I look forward to meeting you.

with Lou Rajhas Iyengar Lou Rajhas Iyengar (born Lou Alexandra Asselin Marante) was born in Venezuela to a French father and Venezuelan mother. She grew up around Yoga, occasionally seeing both her father and step father practice it. When she was 16 Theresa Rowland (family friend, Iyengar Yoga teacher and the owner of Studio Yoga in New Jersey) invited her to her first Yoga class at Studio Yoga in Madison-New Jersey. But it wasn’t until she was 19 that she started practicing consistently. She completed her Iyengar Yoga teacher training with Theresa Rowland in 2005. In 2007 she moved to New York City and met Deborah Wolk and Alison West with whom she studied extensively Yoga for Back Care and Yoga for Scoliosis.  Lou also met Arun at Studio Yoga and studied with him for over 15 years. Lou’s first trip to India to study with the Iyengar family in 2013 was a major turning point for her and her relationship to Yoga and life. She was exposed for the very first time to Prashant Iyengar’s teachings, which gave her a much greater scope of what Yoga encompasses. It was then that she began to see “YOG” everywhere and in everything. Prashantji’s teachings of philosophy and esoteric thought opened the window to help her go “beyond posture” and lead her “closer to Asana”. After 20 years in the US, she relocated to Paris with her husband Rajhas where they spent 5 years teaching and making a family. With their little boy Abhimanyu they have recently moved to a remote area in Les Cevennes (Lozere) where they continue to teach and conduct residential workshops. Lou’s teaching style is firm yet compassionate. Lou has been teaching since 2002 and is an Iyengar Yoga certified teacher. 8:00 am to 9:15 am

Ashlee Willaman is an 8-time marathoner, ultramarathoner, an RRCA Certified Run Coach, and a 500 RYT. She began practicing yoga as part of her dance training at the age of 13, just around the same time she was diagnosed with scoliosis. She learned that yoga kept her back pain at bay and stuck with the practice for the next 20 years. She received her 500 RYT certification from YogaWorks in 2012 and attended a Yoga For Scoliosis Teacher Training Workshop with Elise Miller in October 2014. Having always been a mover and a shaker, when Ashlee stopped dancing she started running and found that she was drawn to long distance running. In 2012 she founded Run Like a Yogi to help athletes infuse training cycles with yoga and meditation. Her alignment-based classes focus on restoring balance to the body in order to avoid injury and recover faster. She teaches at various locations throughout NYC, is a running coach for Hot Bird Running and is on the coaching staff as a yoga instructor for Team Continuum, a charity that provides immediate and vital non-medical assistance to cancer patients and their families when the diagnosis results in disruption, hardship a and uncertainty in everyday lives. www.runlikeayogi.com

    with Wendy Baranello

Wendy Baranello (Santoshi), C-IAYT, has been teaching yoga to various populations in New York City for over 20 years.  She has touched countless students in a variety of venues; The YMCA system for 20 years,  at Integral Yoga, teaching meditation in the CUNY system, and Hatha Yoga at Marymount Manhattan College.  She taught yoga at GMHC for several years for people with AIDS, and at the Mind, Body and Spirit program at Rutger’s Church.  Wendy was a teacher at Yoga Union Center for Backcare and Scoliosis since its inception.  Passionately committed to personal empowerment and social justice, Wendy sees a connection between her work as a Yoga Teacher and Union Organizer for the New York Hotel Trades Council as two sides of the same coin.  She feels that the yoga mat is where yoga begins—a place where we can examine our feelings and observe our impulses in a non -judgemental and loving way.  We then bring our yoga practice off the mat and into the world to take responsibility for healing ourselves and the planet. Wendy was certified by Integral Yoga in NYC in 1994   to teach various aspects and levels of yoga, pranayama, and meditation.  That same year, she began her study of Iyengar Yoga with Brooke Meyers at the New York City Iyengar Institute .  Wendy has studied with Senior Level Iyengar Teacher Elise Miller since 2002, and completed her yoga for Scoliosis training in 2004, again in 2008, and regularly assists Elise in her teacher training.    Wendy also studies with Senior level Iyengar teacher Joan White who she met in 2003, and is enrolled in Ms. White’s teacher training program.  In addition to her yoga certifications Wendy has a certification in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction from Jon Kabitt Zinn and Saki Santorelli, of the Omega Institute.   She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Farleigh Dickenson University.

The practice will help strengthen muscles around the fusion in an aligned manner, bring stability to hypermobile joints or open up very stiff areas—without destabilizing the body or the instrumentation itself.
with Jen GormanGorman_Jen_20_xret_crop Jen Gorman is a scoliosis and spinal fusion patient, advocate, and teacher.  Jen was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of eleven. Less than a year later she underwent spinal fusion surgery where bone from her right iliac crest fused her thoracic vertebrae (T3-T10) secured by a Harington rod. Jen danced professionally in high school and then attended the University of Notre Dame where she studied accounting. She became a Certified Public Accountant and then quickly returned to dancing professionally. Although these experiences differed significantly physically, her back was sensitive regardless of whether she sat all day or danced all day.  She frequently experienced a certain level of discomfort and pain. Jen began practicing yoga to balance her body from the many hours of dancing. She discovered that yoga combined with other methods of cross training allowed her to manage and all together avoid pain.  Eventually, she found her way into a yoga for scoliosis class and then a yoga for spinal fusions class in New York City.  These classes brought to light an even deeper understanding of her body as well as the effects of scoliosis and her spinal fusion. Jen has studied yoga with and assisted classes for Elise Miller Browning, Allison West, and Deborah Wolk. She is a Teacher Trainer with Elise Miller Browning’s Yoga for Scoliosis Program and also holds the following certifications: NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Functional Movement Systems I and II, as well as TRX Suspension.
