She began practicing yoga as part of her dance training at the age of 13, just around the same time she was diagnosed with scoliosis. She learned that yoga kept her back pain at bay and stuck with the practice for the next 20 years. She received her 500 RYT certification from YogaWorks in 2012 and attended a Yoga For Scoliosis Teacher Training Workshop with Elise Miller in October 2014. She teaches at various locations throughout NYC, is a running coach for Hot Bird Running and is on the coaching staff as a yoga instructor for Team Continuum, a charity that provides immediate and vital non-medical assistance to cancer patients and their families when the diagnosis results in disruption, hardship a and uncertainty in everyday lives. www.runlikeayogi.com

  • Fusions Support Group

Fusions Support Group with CJ Shapiro

Thursdays, 4:30-5:30pm Free or by donation Sign Up Here!

Samamkaya Yoga is pleased to offer a support group for people with spinal fusions for scoliosis (or those considering a spinal fusion for their scoliosis). This group, led by CJ Shapiro, is designed to encourage participants to safely explore the emotional toll and experiences related to their fusion in an environment with other participants who share their experience.  Whether you were a teen when your spinal was fused or an older adult or somewhere in between, discussions within this group will draw out personal reflections, identify successful ways to self-heal, and evolve to reflect the needs of the group. Please join CJ as she seeks to encourage health and healing through group interaction—free of the shame and stigma associated with scoliosis and related surgeries. CJ Shapiro understands enduring a lifetime of scoliosis and spinal fusion surgeries. At 16, CJ wore a brace during her vulnerable adolescence creating body image and social issues. In her early twenties, CJ had her first fusion, a Harrington Rod, as her “S” curve and associated pain had progressed. She was told if she wanted to carry children, she would need the surgery. In her, late 50’s, unaware of any issues for 30 years, she was overcome with severe pain and an inability to walk. The unfused areas, upper Thoracic and lower Lumbar discs, had disintegrated from wear and tear. Reconstruction followed and CJ now has 22 screws and 2 cages from T1-S2. Yoga has truly enabled her to be pain free and active, but the emotional scars still require constant attention. CJ majored in Social Psychology as an SSA undergraduate (Carnegie Mellon University) and then pursued a graduate degree in Social Work and Social Research (Bryn Mawr College). Since she was 16, her passion drew her to jail and prison reform in her quest to help the downtrodden and persecuted.  CJ also majored in art and continues to use her x-rays to express her sense of the fused body’s rigidity and her sense of being “caged and screwed”. Throughout her lifetime, CJ has facilitated many types of workshops and support groups and draws on her background in applied, inclusive research for problem-solving and healing.

    Spinal Fusions & Scoliosis

This is a live, interactive virtual class to take from home! Because of the contraindications with Harrington Rods and other instrumentation, being in a general class—even one focused on scoliosis or back problems—can be frustrating. This class covers all the principles and poses of the Yoga & Scoliosis classes but without twists, convex forward bending, back bending. The practice will help strengthen muscles around the fusion in an aligned manner, bring stability to hypermobile joints or open up very stiff areas—without destabilizing the body or the instrumentation itself.
with Jen GormanGorman_Jen_20_xret_crop Jen Gorman is a scoliosis and spinal fusion patient, advocate, and teacher.  Jen was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of eleven. Less than a year later she underwent spinal fusion surgery where bone from her right iliac crest fused her thoracic vertebrae (T3-T10) secured by a Harington rod. Jen danced professionally in high school and then attended the University of Notre Dame where she studied accounting. She became a Certified Public Accountant and then quickly returned to dancing professionally. Although these experiences differed significantly physically, her back was sensitive regardless of whether she sat all day or danced all day.  She frequently experienced a certain level of discomfort and pain. Jen began practicing yoga to balance her body from the many hours of dancing. She discovered that yoga combined with other methods of cross training allowed her to manage and all together avoid pain.  Eventually, she found her way into a yoga for scoliosis class and then a yoga for spinal fusions class in New York City.  These classes brought to light an even deeper understanding of her body as well as the effects of scoliosis and her spinal fusion. Jen has studied yoga with and assisted classes for Elise Miller Browning, Allison West, and Deborah Wolk. She is a Teacher Trainer with Elise Miller Browning’s Yoga for Scoliosis Program and also holds the following certifications: NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Functional Movement Systems I and II, as well as TRX Suspension. Yoga & Somatics for Scoliosis & Fusions with Martha Carter

    Fridays 12:30-1:45 October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Full Series: $110 One Class: $25

Join movement educator Martha Carter for a gentle series of classes combining yoga and somatics. Using specific breathing techniques, students will be guided to visualize their bodies to find clarity and ease. Following a series of yoga poses, freestyle movements, and foundational somatic movement patterning, participants will learn to shift their scoliotic patterns from within, allowing more mobility and less pain. This series is helpful for students of all levels with scoliosis and fusions. It is also educational for bodywork professionals and movement teachers interested in expanding their tools to work with students/clients with scoliosis and fused spines About Martha CarterMartha's gentle approach combines her experiences as a dance artist, yoga teacher, and ‘scoliosis warrior with a fused spine’. Martha's enthusiasm, encouragement, and creativity helps students to connect with the whole body and find awareness, length, strength, comfort and fluidity. About SomaticsBased on the discoveries of Thomas Hanna (1928-1990), Somatics is a combination of his combined expertise as a philosopher, movement educator, and neurophysiologist. Similar in some ways to restorative yoga, the exercises are accessible to all ages, fitness levels and body types. Done lying on the floor in loose clothing, Somatics is known to be anti-aging in the way it helps us re-find and re-fine our mobility, reversing lost function from injuries, disabilities and bad habits.
    with Martha Carter

Martha Carter is the founder and director of Twisted Outreach Project for Back Care and Scoliosis (TOPS), a Canadian-based non-profit that provides a range of holistic and creative approaches to working with back care and scoliosis. TOPS runs workshops, connects specialists, empowers individuals, builds community, and raises awareness. In 2012, TOPS created and continues to build and maintain this resource-filled website and ongoing blog for people living with scoliosis.

As a therapeutic movement specialist for scoliosis and spinal fusions, Martha teaches Gentle Yoga and Scoliosis Wellness classes, workshops, and retreats for all ages and abilities in Canada, the US, and internationally. She is a certified teacher of Yoga for Scoliosis, based on the techniques developed by acclaimed Iyengar teacher, Elise Browning Miller. In 2013, Martha completed her Yoga Teacher Training at the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga, and in 2016 she travelled with Elise to attend and study medical classes at the Iyengar Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India. She has also studied (and continues to enjoy explorations in) Pilates for Scoliosis, Essential Somatics, Energy Medicine, and Trauma Release techniques, which she weaves into all her classes to help participants with pain relief while enhancing their movement potential. Martha holds a BA in Music from Stanford University, and an MFA in Dance from New York University.

In addition to extensive training and study, Martha’s expertise also comes from her own journey of balancing a love for dance with the realities of living with a surgically ‘corrected’ spine due to scoliosis. During her 30+ years of teaching, choreographing, and directing professional dancers, Martha was exposed to many bodywork and somatic disciplines that helped her find optimum mobility, while also teaching the importance of ‘ease’. Applying her life-long knowledge of dance with her understanding of scoliosis-specific exercises has allowed her to discover a new level of mindfulness that she brings to all her teaching.

Martha also teaches classes, workshops, and holds private consultations (with adults, teenagers and their parents) at the TOPS studio in Vancouver, BC, and at her home studio near Miracle Beach on Vancouver Island. She works with clients of all ages who struggle to understand their scoliosis (and other back conditions) as it shifts during different times of life - specifically in adolescence, middle age, and senior years. She teaches clients how to decipher their curves and twists, helping them to regain confidence and freedom of movement in the best way for them. Martha also conducts Skype consultations for distance clients who are seeking personalized help for pain relief and improved movement. She is known for her comforting approach, and clients finish a session feeling rejuvenated - in body, mind, and spirit.

Martha lives on Vancouver Island with a beautiful ocean view close to her large family including step-kids and grandkids. There, she strives to stay active and move every day - even on the hard days - because she understands all too well that if you don’t use it, you lose it.

Ashlee Willaman is an 8-time marathoner, ultramarathoner, an RRCA Certified Run Coach, and a 500 RYT. Having always been a mover and a shaker, when Ashlee stopped dancing she started running and found that she was drawn to long distance running. In 2012 she founded Run Like a Yogi to help athletes infuse training cycles with yoga and meditation. Her alignment-based classes focus on restoring balance to the body in order to avoid injury and recover faster.
